Tokens and Medals

1837 HT 292 NGC AU55 Merchants Exchange R7

$5,500.00

A top notch example of a very rare and challenging variety. Priced very reasonably given an UNC brought $15,000 three and a half years ago at the Litman sale.

(1859) Dickeson 1792 Restrike J-C1792-1,-3   NGC 64 RB

$1,550.00

Obverse designs include the eagle on a half shield (J-C1792-1) and eagle on a full shield. A reverse die with legend TRIAL PIECE DESIGNED FOR UNITED STATES CENT 1792 was combined with each.  These fabrications by Dr. M.W. Dickeson, struck outside the Mint using non-Mint dies, but often collected with the pattern series. Sometime in the 1850's, Dickeson found the obverse dies that had been used or had been intended for use, in embossing the stamp on revenue paper of 1816. He got the idea that these dies had been meant to be part of the 1792 pattern cent series, apparently because of the resemblance to the reverse device of the Mint pattern of 1792 known as the Eagle Cent (J-12). In his Coin Manual, Dickeson illustrated these side by side as No.s 12 and 13 on plate X11. He therefore had the reverse die cut, and struck the pieces described. Some of the copper pieces have been bronzed, and the white metal impressions sometimes are found silver plated. There are two mule varieties that use the obverse of the half eagle of 1805.
